Gerrard spoke yesterday of the best teams he"s played in. He named Torres, Mascherano, Xabi, Carra, Sami, Pepe. Not just talented footballers but strong personalities, winners and players who fought for the shirt. It"s a proper spine for a team to build something around. To me, it"s those areas of the park which require huge investment. Not just one or two players but numerous. Experienced, quality players. You add those kinds of players to the team and of course you"ll see a drastic improvement. But even or best players, the ones we are looking to to get results don"t even offer those qualities. There"s nobody there to drag a performance out of the team or raise our game in the way Suarez did. We"ve had to rely on Sterling and Coutinho to gives us some spark, and neither have done it at the same time. Sterling was the one shining light earlier in the season, when Coutinho couldn"t locate his own arse never mind a football. And conversely Coutinho has been the one we"ve looked in the second half. Even having Strurridge back doesn"t give us an impetus. A proper goal threat yes but a drive and energy when the team is flat, no not so much.
The squad needs a lot of work. Still, after 5 seasons under the new owners and 3 under Rodgers. Right now, we have a few excellent players, some decent ones and a whole lot of average.
