Graham Hunter in Valencia:
It isn"t simply the fact that Roberto Soldado (pictured) notched an imperious hat-trick against BATE two weeks ago which marks him down as the dangerman tonight. The Valencia captain has hit a rich vein of form, possibly by going back to basics. At the beginning of the season he told UEFA.com that he was intent on adding more work and more defending to his game. He revealed that he admired the all areas of the pitch that Wayne Rooney has begun to play in too.
Now, Soldado has eased back to putting slightly more emphasis on scoring duties and his hat-trick was followed by a sublime volley at the weekend during his side"s 2-0 win against Club Atlético de Madrid. In the UEFA Champions League Soldado now has an excellent ratio of 15 goals in 19 games - top class.
It"s a grimy, grey day here on the Mediterranean coast. The rain has been pouring down and there"s more forecast for tonight. So instead of taking a customary early afternoon walk after lunch, three of Valencia"s most important players finished a round of coffees and green teas while they watched a re-run of last night"s Manchester City 2-2 Ajax match (pictured) in the television lounge of the team hotel. The conclusion they drew from seeing the English champions struggling to qualify? "Don"t allow that to happen to us!"
